A Lifelong Practice in Technical Skill Building Through Mentorship + Making

This ongoing body of work reflects Roisin's commitment to the development of her technical skills across multiple disciplines. Focused on traditional craftsmanship, hands-on learning, and immersive experience, the project weaves together a series of personal and professional learning moments that have shaped her practice as a designer and maker.

This project is not defined by a single finished product but by its layered insights and evolving skill set. It represents her belief that design begins with material understanding and that craftsmanship is a foundation for innovation.

Bag-Making with Cordwainer's Trained Master Leather Bag maker Connor Holden of Holden Leather Goods, Dingle, Ireland
Roisin completed two intensive courses in leather bag pattern drafting and construction at Holden’s Leather Goods, a highly respected workshop. She developed numerous patterns and constructed a fully finished leather bag using professional tools and industrial sewing machines gaining insight into both design and production processes.

Roisin completed a short training course with artisan leatherworkers at George Horn Limited, a heritage leather studio in Dublin renowned for their craftsmanship and artisanal quality. Over the duration of the intensive course, she crafted bespoke leather goods such as a passport holder using only manual and non-electrical hand tools. The workshop emphasized traditional techniques, belt-making tools, edge finishing and premium materials. Each stage of the process was completed by hand from cutting and burnishing to painting and sealing under the guidance of experienced leather artisans.

She also completed a costume breakdown training program at Pinewood Studios in Slough, London where the iconic filming location for the James Bond franchise takes place. There, she developed her understanding of material transformation through aging and distressing, sample dye bath preparation, hand-dyeing from beginning, screen printing, airbrushing and blood staining. As part of this course, Róisín decided to create a character-led conceptual project exploring memory, identity and decay. Her piece centered around an ageing woman in a care home, once a muse to a legendary rock band called ‘The Kings’. The woman who was once radiant and iconic now wears a tattered dressing gown, its surface screen-printed with fading fragments of her past. Her old band t-shirt, aged and stained, is the last tangible connection to a time of joy, rebellion, and youth. Through this work, Róisín examined the fragile space between memory and loss, beauty and deterioration, using fabric as a narrative medium.

Tailoring with Savile Row-Trained Master Tailor David Young, Galway, Ireland
Working alongside David Young, Roisin gained foundational experience in traditional menswear tailoring, exploring fitting techniques, construction principles and the value of discipline in the making process.

Internship with Anna Sui, New York City
During Roisin's time at Anna Sui, she contributed to a fast-paced design environment while learning about fashion from a global, industry-level perspective. This experience helped connect her technical making background with commercial fashion design and international workflows.

Through these experiences, Roisin continues to build a language of making that supports both collaboration and independence and reflects her dedication to lifelong learning.
